Dr. Ran Kivetz, Ph.D.
Ran Kivetz is the President of Kivetz & Associates and a chaired, tenured professor at Columbia University Business School. He is an award-winning scholar and leading expert in the areas of behavioral economics, decision making, marketing, survey methodology, customer behavior and perception, incentives, and innovation. His experience in these fields includes over 25 years of academic scholarship, management, consulting, and teaching. Dr. Kivetz’s research, much of which is recognized for bridging consumer behavior with marketing science and quantitative econometric modeling, has won many prestigious awards and nominations, including multiple “Best Paper” awards; multiple finalist nominations for the William F. O’Dell Award (2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2016); being a recipient of the New York Times annual “Best Idea” award; and being ranked as the fourth most prolific scholar in the field during a period of several decades. His work has been featured internationally in major print and broadcast media, and his teaching has won the Columbia Business School Dean’s Award for Innovation in the Curriculum.
Dr. Kivetz has advised Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and entrepreneurial ventures that span a variety of industries, including but not limited to: automotive and transportation, communications, consumer electronics, consumer packaged goods, entertainment and media, fashion, financial services, food and beverage, gaming, healthcare, high technology, hospitality and travel, incentive systems, insurance, Internet, life sciences, manufacturing, market research, retailing and e-commerce, software services, and sustainability. He has served as a testifying expert and consultant on such matters and areas as antitrust and competition, class actions, consumer behavior and perception, damages, defamation, employment disputes, false advertising, intellectual property, likelihood of confusion, marketing and branding strategy, market surveys, patents, promotions, retailing, trademark and trade dress infringement, and other marketing-related issues.
In addition to state and federal courts nationwide, he has appeared in front of regulatory bodies and administrative tribunals such as the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureaus National Programs (“NAD”) and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB). He has also served as a testifying expert on behalf of the Federal Trade Commission.
Dr. Kivetz has conducted or evaluated thousands of marketing research surveys and reports, including many related to customer and managerial behavior and decision making, sales promotions, marketing strategies, branding, trademark, conjoint surveys and analyses, and advertising-related issues. His expert opinions and testimony have been favorably cited and relied upon by courts across the United States.
Dr. Kivetz earned a Ph.D. in business and an M.A. in Psychology from Stanford University and a B.A. in Economics and Psychology from Tel Aviv University.
